After getting settled in my room, we called GrandNan and Grandpa Tom to bring Aedhan up to meet his new brother, GrandNan and Grandpa Tom.

I also was craving a hamburger from Wendy's. Don't ask me, it sounded better than over priced hospital food.

The Birth of BREANDAN TELLSON ALONZO ROSCOE

After being told that I needed to be induced by Dr. Goulding, she set up the induction for February 28th.

We showed up to the hospital at 7:30 AM. I was anxious and nervous at the same time. No one would give me an explanation about why "Cashew" needed to be born now.

While we were waiting for Dr. Reedy to come and start the induction, Debra, the nurse, started monitoring "Cashew" and I. They needed a baseline on "Cashew" and any contractions. I was allowed to order breakfast while we waited.

Once Dr. Reedy arrived and we got to talk. He gave me two choices. Plan A was to wait until Thursday(March 1st) to have a consult with Dr. Kazzi explaining why he wanted me to be induced. Plan B was to start pitocin, get contractions more regular and then, break my water and deliver "Cashew."We decide on Plan B.

After 3 hours of labor and no epideral, Breandan Tellson Alonzo Roscoe was

born at 2:28 PM. He weighed 9 lbs. 13oz and was 21 inches long. The only problem was that Breandan was Hypoglycemic, so his blood had to be drawn for 2 days. Besides being breast feed, he had to also have formula.

Another Scare for "Cashew"

In December 2006, my Grandma Reed was diagnosed with DVT. Her Doctor wanted her children and grandchildren to be tested because it could be inherited.

I got a call from the nurse at my OB/GYN office. I was told that 2 of the results(Anti-Thrombin III and Protein S) came back abnormal. I was told not to go online to research the problem. I was told to stay calm and do what she told me. They were worried about developing a clot in me or the baby. First, I was to start taking 81mg aspirin daily. Secondly, a doctor appt. with Dr. Kazzi at Crittenton Hospital was being set up for me on the 22nd of February. He was the specialist who saw me in January. He doesn't have a good bedside manner and doesn't like to give any explanations. I hoped I would never to see him again. Thirdly, I would have to have a Non-Stress Test 2 times a week until I delivered. Finally, a Biophysical Scan(UltraSound) once a week until I delivered.

I had to be at the hospital half an hour before my appointment. First, I had the ultra sound. The technician thought the baby would be about 7lbs. 1oz. She couldn't get an accurate measurement of his head because his head was so far down in my pelvis. Secondly, I had the NSF test. As far as I knew, it was OK. Finally, my doctor's appt. with Dr. Kazzi(Prompt As Always!!). My Antithrombin III was 75 (Normal Range was 78-130) and my Protein S was 47 (Normal Range 70-128). NO Explanation for the cause, probably because of the pregnancy. The test should be run 6 weeks after the baby is born. He told me to continue aspirin and at my next OB/GYN appt. have them check my cervix. He stated that everything was OK.

As I was leaving, I over heard him stating to his Assistant that I needed to be induced ASAP and to call Dr. Greene's Office.

A Close Call For Cashew

We had a little bit of a scare on Jan 20th. I had some spotting, so we went to Crittenden Hospital(right across the street from our Apartment) which is only a Level 2 for Neonatology. They were concerned because I was dilated to 4 cm already and they said I was having contractions(which I didn't feel) at 32 weeks. They gave me steriods to help with lung development and magnesium sulfate to stop the contractions. Then, I got transferred to St. Joseph Mercy which is a Level 3 for Neonatology. We came home on Jan 24th.

With living in Chicago, we could have our Northside affilation to the Cubs, and we could root for the Detroit Tigers, instead of the White Soxs. We found out the the Detroit Tigers Caravan was going to be at Oakland University. We decided to take Aedhan to see the Tigers. We waited in line to receive a free World Series Towel.

Even though Paul and I were exhausted, we had to keep going. We had to get as much of the apartment set up before he left to fly back for the FedEx Kinko's Regional Leadership Conference in Chicago on the 8th of January. We made sure Aedhan's Room was set up and our bedroom. The 6th was our first night staying at the apartment. We enjoyed a Chinese dinner and relaxing a little bit.

Thank You For the Help in Michigan!!

As we were beginning our new chapter in our life, I was very worried that we wouldn't have enough help in Michigan. Since Larry, our old landlord, forced us to move before the 5th of January (He had supposedly gone and rented the apartment to someone by the first), we tried to get help from our friends and family. Most were going back to work after their time off for the Holidays. We were also concerned because I was 7 months pregnant and couldn't lift much of anything. I felt helpless.

Luckily, we have great family. We'd like to thank our families who always come to our rescue in a pinch: Si (Paul's brother) who came after working and busted his butt,so he could get back to his kids and help them with their homework; Ruth (Paul's Mom, aka Grandma Fish); Jim (Paul's Step-Father, aka Pipi), who was awaiting back surgery, and kept surreptitiously lifting "small things"; our Step-Nephew A.J. (the healthiest lifter of the bunch) who helped unpack well into the evening; Lisa's Father, Tom, who assisted through his pre-hip replacement pain; and Lisa's Mother, Nancy, who baby sat Aedhan (we, of course, had to twist her arm on that one) and who made a huge pot of yummy chili to fill the stomachs of all of the hard workers.

It's funny how long it has taken me to get back to working on the blog. I've got to try to get everyone caught up on what has been going on with the Roscoe Family in 2007. I have my work cut out for me.

The first thing we need to do is to thank every one who helped us pack the truck in Chicago. They took time out of their busy schedules on New Years Eve. Lee Scruggs, who took time from helping his mother. Jeffery Dunn, who took time out from spending it with his family and doing his FTM(Field Training Manager) duties. Finally, Andre Lucero, who flew back from overseas, slept a little bit and then, helped til he had a Vatican obligation at the Chicago Dioceses. He even came back New Years Day to help us finish up.

We'd also like to thank our next door neighbors Laura and David. Laura came over and helped me clean the kitchen and pack. They also offered us a place to sleep since we finished so late New Years Day and were exhausted.

It was very hard to leave Chicago. It had been Paul's home for almost ten years and mine for the last three years. It is where Paul and I had built our life together and started our family. We'll always have the memories, but our hearts will always ache for the "Windy City."

It was a hard Christmas for my Grandma Beckman. It had only been a couple of months since my Uncle Steve had passed away. Aedhan wanted to help everyone open their presents. It was nice to see Grandma laugh as she watched Aedhan.

Aedhan is definitely like his Mommie in the morning. He doesn't like to be awakened before he is ready. If he's woke to soon, he either cries or he wants to be cuddled. This was a bonding moment with his dad before he got into opening his presents.

The best present for Paul and I was that my parents helped us with the Security and Pet Deposit on our apartment in Rochester. It was a big relief off of our minds. We have a place to call home come January 15th.

Our Favorite Things To Do In Chicago In December

First of all, the festivals and concerts in Downtown Chicago. The pictures below are from the Krist Kindl Market in Daly Plaza. We took Aedhan down to get his picture taken with Santa Claus.

Secondly, we'll miss taking the train to any event whether it would be in downtown Chicago or in the suburbs. Chicago has a great mass transit system. You have buses and trains to get you anywhere. In Michigan, you pretty much have to drive everywhere.

Thirdly, we would miss walking down to the Square. In Lincoln Square, you have the luxury of shopping, going to eat or just sitting in the square and letting Aedhan run around with other kids or throwing pennies in the Fountain.

In November, we found out that Paul got the District Trainer Position in Michigan. It felt like the pressure was on Paul and Me. We had to decide when we would be moving to Michigan. Secondly, we had to find an apartment, and thirdly, I had to find and OB/GYN for the rest of my pregnancy (harder than you would think). Most OB/GYN's won't take new patients who are 6 months along.

What kept us in good spirits was Aedhan. He was always eager to help us pack. The below pictures are of Aedhan packing up his magnets off of the fridge.

When Aedhan was born, Uncle Andre's fiance Sanae wanted to make him a kimono. Sanae lives in Japan and is waiting to come to the U.S., and Uncle Andre travels a lot for the Vatican Bank as an economic prefect. It took us quite some time to get this from Uncle Andre. Two years later here it is and Aedhan will pass it onto Cashew. Ultra Man is one Paul's favorite Japanese Monster shows from his childhood. We can't wait til Aunt Sanae comes back to the U.S., and we can thank her.

As I watched Aedhan sleeping, I reiminecsed back to the time when Aedhan was born. I remembered the sleepless nights, the smiles on his face, and the rewards of the time we spent together. The realization came to me that it was worth giving up my job to be with him, and that I couldn't wait for the same bonding moments with "Cashew." There is nothing better than the love you get from your child.

Our Weeks In Michigan

Well, How Our 12 Days in Michigan Began? Paul's counter part Gary Pinkerman,Trainer for Districts 51 and 52 accepted a position in Dallas, TX. Paul and I did a lot of talking and made the decision for him to apply for the position in Michigan. So on November 1st, we would travel to Michigan and on November 2nd, Paul would have his interview.

While Paul would be in Michigan, he would do some Pack and Ship classes, as well as Compact Car training for new stores that would be open in the next few months.

Our thinking about moving back to Michigan was that we would be closer to both of our families. Secondly, we could rent a cheaper apartment than in Chicago and save money, so we can buy a house with some land. The cost of living is much higher in Chicago than in Michigan. Thirdly, I would have family close-by to watch the boys, if I decide to go back to work part-time or go back to school.

Paul and I took Aedhan around the block in our neighborhood. Aedhan tried to be a giraffe, but it was a bit to small. He had fun going to the doors, but he wouldn't say "Trick-or-Treat." He would say, "Thank You." Then, he helped us pass out candy at our house.

Some businesses in our area sponsor Trick-Or-Treating for Kids the weekend before Halloween. Kids get to get dressed up in their Halloween Costumes and go to each business to get candy and presents. Aedhan received candy as well as stickers, pencils, a coloring book and a tooth brush.

6 Month Belly Shots

We had found out it was another boy. There was excitement for both Paul and Me, but there was a little bit of disappointment that it wasn't a girl. Paul and I had always thought that we'd only wanted two kids, but now we've decided to keep our options open. Maybe in two years, we'll try for a little girl, but with our luck we'll have the startings of a offensive line.

Is It A Boy or A Girl?

Paul and I were excited to find out if we were having a boy or girl. The only problem we had was that Paul was doing training on that day, so Aedhan and I would go to the Ultra Sound. Aedhan was excited to go with Mommie. He was a perfect Little Man who sat in the chair and behaved while the ultra sound was being performed.
With all of the heartburn I was having, I thought it was a girl with lots of hair. TUMS were my friend during this pregnancy. I had always heard the wives tale that you get a lot of heartburn with a baby with a lot of hair. The doctor stated that the wives tale was false.

Once we had picked Paul up from the airport, following his business trip to Dallas, we realized we didn't have cake for Aedhan's Birthday. We let Aedhan stay up late to celebrate.

The day of the Michigan State/Michigan football game (10-7-06) will always hold a special memory for me (Lisa). Before the Game, we went to the Chili/Clam Chowder Luncheon. Bo Schembechler was there, and I got his autograph for Aedhan. I told Bo to tell his son, Schemy and Schemy's wife to be patient. They would get pregnant in due time. They need to relax and don't force anything. It was the last time I would ever see Bo before he passed away.

BUNN Test for "Cashew"

We went Evanston Northwestern Hospital for our BUNN test. It is a ultrasound that measures the clear space in the folds of tissue behind a developing baby's neck. This measurement, taken together with the mother's age and the baby's gestational age, can be used to calculate the odds that the baby has Down Syndrome. They also do a blood test in conjunction with the ultra sound to get a better accuracy for Down Syndrome."Cashew"
The technician said that "Cashew" was very active.

Bubbles, Bubbles Everywhere!!!

Because of the complaint the night before, I went down to the front desk and requested a different room on the first floor. I didn't want to upset any other patrons at the hotel. They gave us a room with a jacuzzi tub. We found out later from the staff that the lady was never happy with anything at this hotel.

That night, we went to Meijer's to pick Aedhan up some bottles of Mr. Bubble Bubble Bath (much cheaper in Michigan than Illinois).

Aedhan had gotten a hold of one of the bottles and poured 3/4 of a bottle in the jacuzzi. It was a bath full of BUBBLES, BUBBLES EVERYWHERE!!!

After taking a Pregnancy Test on July 21st, I made an appointment with my OB/GYN for August 2nd. I didn't have to take another pregnancy test or blood test. We did an Ultra Sound which showed I was 8 weeks & 1 day, which makes our due date March 14, 2007. Measuring "Cashew"

Aedhan is 21 Months old, and we've never taken him to Lake Michigan to just play in the sand and water. It's amazing how much he loves the water and sand. We tried to get him into swim lessons at the Local Park, but they were already full. We try to work on swimming in the bath tub.

We took Aedhan to Monroe Harbor to watch the Chicago Fireworks. He normally loves the fireworks, but this year he cried and covered his ears. We think he didn't like being crowded into a small area with a lot of people, especially the drunken idiots.

Aedhan's First Visit to Indiana Dunes & Lake Michigan

Indiana Dunes, a sliver of natural beauty on Lake Michigan, is nestled between the industrial towns of Gary and Michigan City, Indiana. For millenia the dunes along the northern shore of Indiana sat undisturbed by human progress, and ran from Michigan almost to Chicago. As the steel mills and railroads arrived, industrialists saw the resources of the area as theirs to use to drive the progress and capitalism of the industrial growth of the Midwest.

By the 1950's, the majority of the Dunes had been destroyed, or met the fate of Hoosier Slide, the largest of the Dunes, which was hauled away, box-car by box-car to be used to make Ball glass fruit jars and Pittsburg Plate Glass.

Fortunately, by 1966, a group of environmentally minded individuals had won their battle, begun in 1908 by pioneering botanist Henry Cowles, to create a National Park from the remaining dunes in the Beverly Shores area. Four times since the creation of the park, the NPS has purchased land and increased the size of the park to its current size of 15,000 acres. The park now surrounds the town of Beverly Shores and ranges from hardwood forest to bog and soaring dunes to roaring surf-filled beaches.

I discovered Indiana Dunes shortly after I moved to Chicago in 1997. It has become a favorite camping location nearly every year since. The Dunes have also been a favorite getaway from Chicago since Lisa moved here.

In June, following a visit to our friends, April and Jon, we decided to take Aedhan for his first visit to the Dunes. (Lisa refused to let me take him camping there two weeks after he was born in Octobe 2004).

This was his first beach-combing experience.

Of course, any child near the water at the beach will inevitably fall into the lake, as Aedhan did. He got so excited by the refreshingly cool water and the sand running over and under his feet, that he fell backwards into the surf. In this photo Aedhan gives Daddie the wet rock he found in the water after falling in. As always, Daddie gets to carry the wet rock and the wet child back to the car. It reminded me of all of the times my father, Terry, carried me and my brother, Si, soaking wet, from the beach to the car.

As part of the deal with Aedhan, we took him to McDonald's, so he could collect the cars from the movie 'CARS.' He got Lightning McQueen the 1st time and Sally the 2nd time. Before we left town, we stopped at McDonald's for a Happy Meal. We each got a Happy Meal with a different car. He got Doc Hudson, Mater"the tow truck," and Ramone. Let's just say I don't want to have to eat another Happy Meal in a LONG TIME. At least in Indiana and Michigan, I could just buy the cars.

CARS - The Movie

The Movie 'CARS' came out on June 9th. We took Aedhan to see his first movie. He did an excellent job sitting and watching the film for two hours. He only got fidgety once or twice. Aedhan talked to the characters on-screen periodically, calling out, "Go, CAAAHHHSSS," and "Big cahs!"

As soon as the movie was over, Aedhan was off up the aisle, even before Mommie and Daddie, to go see the movie cardboard standee in the lobby. He stood next to the standee, talking to the cars for quite awhile, and pointing out to all nearby that these were his "cahs".

That evening Aedhan would not stop talking about the cars. He talked on the phone to GrandNan, Grandpa Tom, Grandma Fish, Pipi, and Papa all about the cars, cars, cars...

Later that evening we went to the official Disney website for the movie to allow him to watch the movie trailers and the teasers. We downloaded all of them for him to watch when he wanted, and also downloaded some JPEGs of the characters. From that day to the present, no evening is complete without a visit to the website, watching the trailers, or watching a slide-show of the JPEGs. He even, somehow, changed the computer desktop wallpaper to Fillmore the VW bus. When he wakes up in the morning his first words are "Cahs. Mah cahs!"

May Fest In Lincoln Square

The Chicago-Lincoln Square May Fest is sponsored by the Karnevalsgesellschaft Rheinische Verein, which was established in 1890 by Germans from the Rheinland. They are also known as the Mardi Gras Society. Each year, on the first weekend in June, Alderman Schulter closes down Lincoln Avenue from the corner of Leland Avenue to the intersection of Western Avenue, and the Mardi Gras Society lays out a great small festival. In the municipal parking lot, they erect a huge tent that holds the maiwein (sweet white wine), beers (maibock, lager, and pilsener), the stage for the polka bands and German 80's cover bands, and the dance floor. On the Lincoln Avenue curve, they place the grills and food tents that contain everything from Thuringer sausage, Bratwurst, and Lieberkase to herring sandwiches, pretzels, and struedel.

In the other parking lot near Western Avenue, a carnival midway is set-up with kids games and the usual carny stuff. (Aedhan always loves the Rubber Duckie game, where every year he wins an inflatable hammer, which he promptly uses to hit Mommie and Daddie over their heads).

I have included a description of the Deutsche Mai Fest tradition (from the Mardi Gras Society website) below:

"The tradition of May Fest has come down through the ages to signify the arrival of Spring, it is celebrated with a Maibaum. The Maibaum, with its close connections to the pagan and Christian tree of life, is the May Fest’s symbol of fertility and rebirth. Traditionally, the bark of a tall fir or pine tree is removed except for a few feet of treetop. Legend has it that this is done to rid the tree of evil spirits who roam the deep, dark forests of the German hinterlands but hide under the bark of trees in winter. The Maibaum is then garnished with a wreath of fir or pine branches and flowers which is perched just under the treetop. Long, multi colored ribbons stream down from the wreath and around the Maibaum itself, and painted woodcuts depicting the main crafts and local culture of the village are hung as branches down along its sides. Some villages hold a contest to see who can climb the Maibaum, barefoot, the fastest. The prize, pretzels or sausages, is hidden inside the wreath. Though the Maibaum is set up in the village square, it has to be guarded carefully less it is stolen and held for ransom (typically a barrel of beer) by the men of a neighboring village.
Of course, if Spring is in the air, the May Fest also holds the promise of romance as dances around the Maibaum entice those so inclined into the spirit of the season. - (Mike Haas)"

On the first day of the festival the Alderman and the President of Rheinische Verein hold the official Keg Tapping Ceremony. From that Thursday, until Sunday at 10:00pm, thousands of people will visit the festival. This year four of those participants were Lisa, Paul, Aedhan, and Andre Lucero (a friend of ours from Kinko's).

Memorial Day

For Memorial Day, we took Aedhan to the parade downtown. It was funny because many military servicemen and women were taking Aedhan's photo as they were marching in the parade. Aedhan also got his first Air Force Pin from someone in the parade.

After the Parade, we took Aedhan to Crowne Fountain to play in the water. There are two towers down which water cascades to a pool at the base. Children run around and play in the pools, splashing everyone and everything nearby.

It's funny how Aedhan doesn't need tons of candy. We did an Easter Egg Hunt in our backyard because we had gone to a Park District sponsored Easter Egg Hunt which was poorly managed. Aedhan only got 3 eggs, and he tried to share with other children who didn't get any eggs.
We filled most of the eggs with money since Aedhan loves to receive it and put it in his Piggy Banks. He's already starting to "pinch his pennies."

The apartment we live in has a backyard, so in April, Paul and I were raking the leaves to get ready to plant the garden and clean up the yard for Aedhan to play. Aedhan was trying to help, but instead, he decided to try the dirt.

Welcome Family and Friends to the Roscoe Family blog!!! We created this to make it easier for you to keep up to date with what is happening in our lives. Here are some photos from earlier this year to get you caught up.

The photo of the family is from "The Dyeing Green of the Chicago River " and "The North-Side" St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 11,2006. Even though it was an overcast day, Aedhan and Paul got sunburned. Aedhan got a little bit of sun poisoning on his cheeks. He didn't complain. He's such a trooper!!

Aedhan was almost 17 months old. He is our little explorer, as well as very outgoing with strangers. He acts like the youngest member of the Chicago Welcoming Committee, waving at everyone and saying, "Hello!"
